Lyons Wins Season Championship Feature; Shook Wins First Title
Brandon Lyons drove from 12th starting spot all the way to victory lane in the 100 lap Season Championship feature for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Outlaw Super Late Models Friday night at Kalamazoo Speedway. 2011 champion Phil Bozell finished a solid second ahead of last week’s winner Doug True, Tom Thomas and Mark Shook, who clinched his first track championship. Former Plymouth Speedway Late Model champion Adam Terry led the second half of the top ten over 12-time champion Andy Bozell, Matt Frazier, 2-time track champion Ben Raber and rookie Tyler Heeney. Rick Senneker was the fastest qualifier of the 23 cars in attendance.
Nick Pressler picked up the win in the thirty lap Super Stock feature, holding off fast qualifier and four-time track champion Kenny Head over the closing laps. Cory Pressler finished third ahead of Ron Maynard Jr. and Tom Wright. Defending Outlaw Cyber Stock champion Keegan Dykstra finished sixth ahead of David Reames, Carl Burlingham, James Roden and Daton Wright. Buddy Head was involved in an accident and finished 15th but was still able to secure yet another track title.
Fan favorite Keith Wilfong picked up the win in the thirty lap Pro Stock feature. Greg Brown did everything he could do to win his first title but came up just short finishing second in both the race and the title fight. Fast qualifier Kyle Ribble finished third ahead of Matt Corliss and Ryan Minton. The fourth place finish gave Corliss the track championship. Three-time champion Greg Haynes finished sixth ahead of Bob Miller, Barry Jenkins, Matt Maurer and Ron Landis.
The first season of the Southwest Michigan Mini Stock Challenge Series came to a close with Jerime Damron picking up both the feature victory and the series championship. Marcus Carlson finished second ahead of Doug Gallandt, Kyle Shannon and Matt Noble. Young Curtis Towne came home sixth beating out Sean Elkins, Tony Neeson, Dave Long and Marcus Vancleave. Andrew Brest was the fast qualifier.
After setting quick time in the Outlaw Cyber Stock division Dan Rigoni was forced to start dead last for the twenty lap feature but even that wasn’t enough to keep him out of victory lane. Rigoni picked up both the feature victory and the season title. Brian Gregersen finished second ahead of Jeremy Young, Nick Layman and Mason Dykstra. Dion Vrooman wound up sixth ahead of 2015 Flip Flop Cyber Stock champion Brock Sweeter, Doug Nelson, Ryan Hufford and Logan Meinema.
The Flip Flop Cyber Stocks ran their fifteen lap feature in the “wrong” direction and saw Joey Failing bring home the victory over Lane Head, who clinched the 2015 championship. Joel Swieringa, Tony Lobretto and Nick Failing rounded out the top five. The second half of the top ten was led by Travis Reniger over Valerie Bozell, Denver Sweat, Kyra Donald and Brandon French. Lane Head also set quick time.
This SATURDAY, September3 one of the most anticipated events of the season takes place with the annual Call of the Wild Presented by Raceceiver. This “Run What Ya Brung” event features the famous “Raceceiver Qualifying Showdown” in which the five fastest cars from the final practice session will have the track to themselves for 30 minutes in an attempt to break the world record for speed around a 3/8 mile track. Just last season Mike Schewchuk ran a 9.924 second lap at 136.034mph to set the world record. In addition to the thrilling “Raceceiver Qualifying Showdown” the event will also feature a 50 lap main event paying $1,500 to win.
