Brooks Holds Off Foote to Win “Little Caesars 50” at the Zoo

Mike “Bubba” Brooks held off fast qualifier AJ Foote at the closing stages of Saturday night’s “Little Caesars 50” for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Outlaw Super Late Models at Kalamazoo Speedway. Marc Casey finished an impressive third ahead of Jerry Zachary and Matt Frazier. Billy Shannon led the second half of the top ten over Dan Roodvoets, Chuck Greer, Matt Corliss and Ben Raber. Several of the point contenders encountered trouble including Luke Krick, who finished 12th, Todd Harrington in 13th and John Chapman in 16th.  Zachary and Brooks won the heat races. Brooks now leads the championship standings by just 44 points over Foote with Chapman (-93), Krick (-121) and Harrington (-130) rounding out the top five.

The Super Stock division ran the “Super Stock Sonic 45 Presented by 7UP” which saw Buddy Head emerge victorious over his brother Kenny Head, who set quick time earlier in the evening. Austin Maynard finished a very impressive third ahead of Brandon Lyons and Rodney Spencer. Rob Hardy wound up sixth beating out Gary Denzel, James Roden, Scott Rugg and Patrick Kirkendall. Championship contender Chris Shannon encountered problems early in the event and finished a disappointing 13th. Buddy’s victory now puts him 59 points ahead of his brother in the battle for the championship.

2013 Kalamazoo Speedway Pro Stock champion John Foote Jr. returned to victory lane Saturday night, picking up the victory in the thirty lap Pro Stock feature. Toby Montgomery finished right on Foote’s rear bumper in second ahead of fast qualifier Brent Hook, Barry Jenkins and Budd Hybels. The second half of the top ten was led by Greg Brown over Keith Wilfong, Mark Campbell, Dave Hopwood and Lynne Zachary, who made her first appearance of the season. Foote Jr. and Montgomery collected the two heats race victories. The battle for the Pro Stock championship continues to be a thrilling one with Montgomery now just 26 points ahead of Foote Jr. and 44 points ahead of Hook.

Chuck Greer put on an impressive driving display to pick up the victory in the “Mini Stock Magnum 25 Presented by Texas Corral”. Greer held off Noah Gallandt, former champion Frank Stager, Billy Bussema and Chaz Hook to pick up the victory. Shane Clark finished sixth beating out Andrew Brest, Logan Knight, Brian Echtinaw and Daniel Bratcher. The top two drivers in the championship standings entering the evening both encountered problems resulting in finishes of 12th and 14th place respectively for Jerime Damron and Keith Dunham. Their problems now put an incredible eight drivers within just 151 points of the lead. Damron hold on to the lead by just 32 points over Greer with Dunham (-58), Bussema (-79), Clark (-110), Gallandt (-121), Stager (-125) and Chaz Hook (-151) all still within striking distance.

The Cyber Stock division saw Jerry Jansen Jr. continue his impressive 2014 season by setting quick time, starting in 16th spot and picking up the win in the twenty lap feature. Jerry Jansen III finished second ahead of Josh Roberts, Keegan Dykstra and TC Burgess. Brian Gregersen wound up sixth beating out Ryan Hufford, Curtis Towne, Kyle Jansen and Kyle Shannon. Bob Miller and Doug Nelson collected the two heat race victories. Jansen Jr. now leads Dykstra in the championship battle by 111 markers.

This Saturday night, June 7 will bring one of the biggest shows of the entire season to the high banks of the Zoo. The Auto Value Bumper to Bumper Winged Super Sprint Series will come to town for their only 2014 appearance at the Zoo. Also in action will be the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Outlaw Super Late Models, who will run the “Shifters 50”. Finally the Top Speed Modified Tour will complete the program.
