Kalamazoo Speedway Celebrates 75th Anniversary at FireKeepers Casino Hotel

The Kalamazoo Speedway celebrated a historic milestone this past Saturday, February 21st, hosting its 75th Anniversary Banquet at FireKeepers Casino Hotel. Nearly 250 guests gathered to honor the accomplishments of the 2025 season and reflect on the rich tradition of racing that has defined “The Zoo” for generations.

Track announcer Joel Areaux welcomed attendees and set the tone for an evening filled with celebration and appreciation. Speedway promoter Donnie Ritter then delivered his annual State of the Speedway address, outlining the continued growth of the program and the exciting vision ahead for 2026.

Honoring the Best of 2025

The top ten drivers in each division were recognized with impressive hardware, highlighting the depth of talent that competed throughout the season. Special recognition was given to the 2025 Track Champions:

Mark Shook – Steak 'n Shake (Kalamazoo, MI) Late Models

Bryce Bozell – Honor Credit Union Late Models

Kyle Ribble – Techworks Trailer Sales Street Stocks

Matthew Elsey, Jr. – O'Reilly Auto Parts A Front Wheel Drive Division

Scott Elsey – Spartan Insulation & Coating Company Front Wheel Drives

Cayden Verburg – C Front Wheel Drives (Randy’s Trucking)

Each champion, or their representative, addressed the crowd with heartfelt remarks, thanking teams, sponsors, family members, and fans for their support throughout the season.

Rookie of the Year Honors

The future of Kalamazoo Speedway was also on full display as Rookie of the Year awards were presented to:

Mason Metzger – Late Models

Joseph McDonald – Front Wheel Drives

Both drivers were recognized for their impressive debut seasons and commitment to the sport.

Special Awards Close the Evening

The evening concluded with several emotional and meaningful presentations. The inaugural Last Lap Award was presented to Keith “Skeeter” Reed, honoring his lasting impact on the speedway community.

To cap off the celebration, Kenny Head and Billy Shannon were each presented with the prestigious Legacy Award, marking the close of two historic racing careers and recognizing their longstanding contributions to Kalamazoo Speedway.

Looking Ahead to 2026

With the 75th Anniversary celebration now in the books, attention turns to the 2026 racing season. Open practice is scheduled for April 11th, with the official season opener set for Friday, April 17th at 7:30PM featuring the Intimidator 100.

As Kalamazoo Speedway enters its 76th year of competition, the momentum continues to build for another exciting chapter in one of Michigan’s most storied short tracks.
